How to Take the Perfect Photo of Your Pet for a Custom Portrait Pendant
Share

The quality of your custom pendant starts with the quality of your photo. A great photo gives our sculptors everything they need to capture your pet's unique personality in stunning 3D detail. A blurry or dark photo, on the other hand, means we're working with less information — and the result won't be as lifelike as it could be.
The good news? You don't need a professional camera or photography skills. A smartphone is more than enough. You just need to know a few simple tricks.
The Single Most Important Rule
Get a clear, front-facing photo of your pet's face.
That's it. That's the rule. Everything else in this article is just helping you achieve that one thing.
Our pendants are circular, with your pet's face as the center of the composition. A front-facing or slightly angled view (about 10–20 degrees to one side) gives us the best result. We need to see both eyes, both ears, the nose, and the mouth clearly.
Lighting: Natural Light Is Your Best Friend
Do this: Take the photo near a window during the day, or outside in indirect sunlight (shade is perfect). Natural light is soft, even, and brings out the true colors and textures of your pet's fur.
Avoid this: Flash photography (creates harsh shadows and makes eyes glow), dim indoor lighting (results in grainy, blurry photos), and direct overhead sunlight (creates dark shadows under the eyes and nose).
Pro tip: The best time for indoor photos is mid-morning or mid-afternoon, when natural light is streaming in through windows but not directly hitting your pet.
Distance and Framing
Do this: Get close enough that your pet's head fills most of the frame. We're sculpting their face, so we need as much facial detail as possible. A photo taken from across the room won't give us enough to work with.
Avoid this: Full-body shots (your pet's face is too small in the frame), group shots with multiple pets (we need one pet per photo), and photos where your pet is wearing clothing, hats, or accessories that cover their ears or face.
Ideal framing: Your pet's head and upper chest/shoulders fill roughly 70–80% of the photo frame. Think of it like a passport photo — but for your pet.
Focus and Sharpness
Do this: Tap on your pet's face on your phone screen before taking the photo. This tells your camera to focus on the face. Hold the phone steady — use both hands if needed. Take 5–10 photos in quick succession and pick the sharpest one later.
Avoid this: Photos taken while your pet is mid-motion (running, shaking, playing). Even if it's a cute action shot, the blur will make it unusable for sculpting. Wait for a moment of stillness.
Pro tip: For dogs, hold a treat right above your phone camera. They'll look directly at the lens with alert, bright eyes — perfect for the pendant. For cats, try a toy with a small sound right behind the phone.
Expression Matters
The expression in your photo is the expression that will be immortalized in metal forever. Think about what expression best represents your pet:
- The happy, tongue-out smile of a golden retriever
- The dignified, serious gaze of a French Bulldog
- The alert, curious look of a Border Collie
- The sleepy, content expression of a cat in their favorite spot
There's no wrong expression — just make sure it's one that makes you smile when you see it. That's the one you want on your pendant.
Background Doesn't Matter
Don't worry about what's behind your pet. We're only sculpting their face — the background is completely irrelevant. Whether it's a messy living room, a cluttered kitchen, or a beautiful park, it won't show up on the pendant at all.
Focus entirely on getting a great shot of their face. That's all we need.
What If My Pet Has Passed Away?
If you're creating a memorial pendant and can't take a new photo, that's completely fine. Look through your phone's camera roll, your social media posts, and any photos friends or family might have shared with you.
What works well:
- Any photo where their face is clearly visible, even if the overall photo quality isn't perfect
- A photo from a birthday, holiday, or special occasion where they were looking at the camera
- A screenshot from a video (pause the video at a moment when their face is clear and sharp)
What we can work with but isn't ideal:
- Side profiles (we can create a side-view pendant, but front-facing gives the best result)
- Older, lower-resolution photos (we'll do our best, but detail will be limited)
- Photos with heavy filters or edits (send us the original unfiltered version if possible)
If you're unsure whether your photo is good enough, just submit your order and upload the best one you have. Our team will review it within 24 hours and let you know if we need a different angle or a clearer image. We're always happy to help you find the best photo.

Quick Checklist Before You Upload
Before you place your order, run through this quick checklist:
- ✅ Face is front-facing or slightly angled
- ✅ Both eyes are visible
- ✅ Photo is sharp and in focus (not blurry)
- ✅ Good lighting (natural light preferred)
- ✅ Pet's head fills most of the frame
- ✅ Only one pet in the photo
- ✅ No accessories covering ears or face
- ✅ Expression is one you love and want to remember
If your photo checks most of these boxes, you're good to go.

What Happens After You Upload
Once you place your order and upload your photo, here's what happens next:
- Our team reviews your photo within 24 hours
- If the photo is great, we begin sculpting immediately
- If we need a better photo, we'll email you with specific suggestions
- Within 48 hours, you'll receive a 3D preview of your pendant for approval
- You can request one free revision if anything needs adjusting
- After you approve, crafting begins — and your pendant will be in your hands within 2–3 weeks
It all starts with one photo. Your favorite photo. The one that makes you feel something every time you look at it.
That's the one.
